EUROPEAN MATHEMATICAL SOCIETY SUMMER SCHOOL
on
WAVELET METHODS IN ANALYSIS AND SIMULATION

Orsay, France, June 29 to July 10, 1998

In recent years, new ideas related to multi-scale methods and wavelet bases have appeared in many area of applied mathematics and engineering sciences, such as
  • Signal and image processing
  • Numerical analysis and scientific computing
  • Turbulence analysis and multi-fractal analysis
  • Statistical estimation and modeling
  • These ideas are practically implementable by fast and simple algorithms, while the understanding of their effectiveness in the above applications, relies on a strong input of theoretical harmonic analysis and approximation theory. This summer school is intended to provide in two weeks with:
  • A basic theoretical understanding of the main mathematical tools and concepts underlying wavelet-based methods. This will be provided by a basic course of 10 hours, during the two weeks.
  • An more detailed insight on the specific applications and of the potential of wavelet methods in comparison with other methods. A series of thematic short courses (2 to 5 hours) will be devoted to this task.
  • A practical experience of the implementation of these methods, in the context of the above applications, by programming exercise sessions on the computer equipment that will be provided at the site.
  • The two weeks will have distinct orientations: analysis problems using multi-scale decomposition of the data in the first week, and numerical simulation problems using the multi-scale representation of the unknowns in the second week. In the same location, a third week of summer school will take place from July 13 to 18, specifically dealing with domain decomposition methods. Informations on this activity, as well as registration forms, will be available on the site http://www.asci.fr by the end of February 98. The school is especially addressed to PhD students and confirmed researchers in applied mathematics, as well as researchers from industry dealing with numerical problems. During these two weeks, they are expected to interact fruitfully together with leading expert in concerned field. Lectures will take place at laboratoire ASCI on the campus of University Paris XI, Orsay, 30mn from Paris by train. Accommodation at reasonable price is possible on the campus.
