1.1 Introduction

Brittle fracture and stable damage has been proposed new formulations by G.A. FRANCFORT and J.-J. MARIGO.

A numerical implementation of the damage theory has been proposed by G. ALLAIRE, S. AUBRY and F. JOUVE.

The brittle fracture problem is still spending in the general case, but a numerical implementation, similar to the method developed for the D. MUMFORD and J. SHAH functional for image segmentation has been issued, in the antiplane case.
