Transport

in Physics, Biology and Urban traffic

CIRM, Marseille, France
July 18 - August 26, 2022

Program

The goal of this event is to gather scientists from both the academic and industrial communities to work and discuss on mathematical modelling, analysis and numerical simulation of transport problems. The program includes:

  • 1 week summer school (July 18-22)
  • 5 weeks research session on projects proposed by academic scientists and/or industrial partners (July 25 - August 26)
The event takes place at CIRM (Centre International de Rencontres Mathématiques) in Marseille (France). Participants may register to the summer school only or to the entire program. Junior participants may apply for fellowships to cover part or the whole stay.

Transport

Transport problems encompass both fundamental and industrial issues. The topic is intentionally broad and gather very current challenges. Transport processes occur at different scales, from the fast motion of ions and electrons in plasmas up to the urban mobility issues passing by the molecular motor dynamics inside cells. Transport can be very simple but very massive and thus requires specific high-performance computing algorithms to reduce data transfer. Transport can also be very sophisticated and mathematical development is often necessary to characterize and control it. There is also a strong, bidirectional connection between Data Science and transport issues. The most obvious one is the crucial role played by Data Science techniques to handle the large amount of mobility data. On the other hand, optimal transport has also been recently a pivotal tool to develop and analyze new methods for machine learning.
