Société de Mathématiques Appliquées et Industrielles

Decision of January 17, 2020, by the SMAI Board of Directors Regarding Participation in SMAI Activities

All individuals wishing to participate in SMAI activities commit to maintaining respectful behavior towards others during such events and acknowledge having read this motion.

These activities are organized in accordance with the principles of SMAI, a learned society dedicated to the advancement of applied mathematics by fostering exchanges between academia and industry in a spirit of intellectual openness and mutual respect. SMAI reserves the right to exclude any individual whose behavior, whether intentional or unintentional, is deemed inappropriate. In particular, this includes: 1) Any form of discriminatory behavior, 2) Any act of harassment, 3) Any abuse of power or retaliatory action.

Given the professional benefits that SMAI activities may offer to participants, SMAI expects all attendees to conduct themselves in compliance with the regulations in force at their home institutions regarding professional relationships.

SMAI specifically highlights the fact that clear or perceived hierarchies in the research environment may create difficulties for junior members in expressing discomfort regarding certain remarks or behaviors.

The following behaviors are deemed unacceptable:
Threats or aggressive behavior towards another person.
 Jokes with a discriminatory nature.
Disclosure or threats of disclosing another participant’s personal information, including on social media.
Personal insults, particularly those involving racist, sexist, homophobic, or xenophobic language.
Unsolicited emotional or physical intimacy, including sexual advances, sexually suggestive contact, or comments regarding another person’s gender, sexual orientation, or attire.
The questioning of the principles outlined above.

Such behavior may result in exclusion from SMAI activities without financial compensation, without prejudice to any further legal or institutional actions.

SMAI also reminds participants that sexual harassment and moral harassment are criminal offenses punishable by law.
