Conférence 4 : Physically correct and timely simulations: the challenge towards Virtual Prototyping
Le diaporama (pdf 13 MB) Abstract Today's industry trend is towards reduction of physical prototyping through simulation driven design in order to reduce drastically the time-to-market of new products. This is called Virtual Prototyping. However, it relies heavily on the capacity to reproduce through simulation the correct physics and in a timely way to respect the industrial development process deadlines. This presentation will expose some of the challenges in capturing the correct physics within the simulation of the performance of a product in the making. It will be shown that as we move to new products in terms of new concepts and materials, the incorporation of manufacture in the simualtion process is a necessary integral part. The resulting model size and complexity (FE/meshless) places many of these challenges beyond any industrial use, unless new methods (like multiscale modelling) or new computational techniques (like usage of GPUs or supercomputing at large) are developed further. Evidence of these challenges will be offered from the automotive and aeronautical sector in terms of detailed manufacture, assembly and performance of virtual prototypes.
