The development of methods improving relative dynamics control between artificial satellites is motivated by new needs as autonomous orbital rendezvous (between ATV and ISS, between an orbiter and a capsule around Mars, etc.), formation flying control (deployment, reconfiguration, maintenance), space systems assembling, orbit servicing (geostationary satellites life extension, space garbage cleaning). In order to investigate different ways to achieve these objectives, several European projects are running: PROBA-3 (the ESA formation flying demonstration mission), MSR (devoted to the Martian sample return), SMART-OLEV (which aims the life extension of geostationary satellites), HARVD (which focuses on autonomous orbital rendezvous and docking techniques for future solar system exploration missions),... As increasing motivation and new objectives raised up, it became necessary to revise traditional guidance methods in order to adapt them to autonomous missions design and to develop new algorithms certifying efficiency and robustness of orbital rendezvous guidance. That sets the topic of this thesis up. As far as the homing operation is concerned, one aims an actuated deputy satellite to reach a final relative state with respect to an inert target satellite. This goal is to be achieved in fixed time under fuel optimization constraint thanks to impulsive maneuvers. Actual guidance techniques consist in open loop control since no feedback information about the relative state between the spacecrafts is currently used in the trajectory design. Although these strategies simplify operational achievement, they do not offer rejection capability of perturbations and uncertainties following relative motion model linearization, sensors and embedded actuators technological limitations, etc. To provide Rendezvous guidance with robustness property, an intuitive idea frequently used in the space industry consists in the following iterative procedure: - Generating a constrained maneuvers plan that leads the deputy vehicle to reach a final relative state in fixed time from its current state at the time t0. - Performing the first maneuver of the plan at the time t1 > t0. - Estimating the new current relative state at the time t2 > t1 (e.g. just after effectuation of the first maneuver). - From this new state, generating a new plan of maneuvers to reach the target, and return to Step 2. Although this heuristic method looks like a closed loop strategy, it is not based upon a formal and rigorous analysis that solely ensures stability and robustness with respect to uncertainties and allows performances quantification. To cope with these issues, we intend to tackle the guidance problem in the general framework of the model predictive control (MPC) techniques. Albeit these methods take up the reasoning described above ? e.g. optimizing control actuation under constraints on a receding horizon ? they are mainly designed to take advantage from the feedback pieces of information about the gap between nominal and actual positions and also from the control sequence itself so that it becomes possible to online adapt the control law, soften the constraints or even evolve the model used in the algorithm. It is noteworthy that the feedback concept used in this framework is set upon a specific control structure, adaptive or not, for which the cost function ? which quantifies the rendezvous accuracy ? will be an influent factor on the stability of the whole system. The prospective nature of this way of investigation consists in replacing the previous heuristics by a formal approach that sets the stability, ensures robustness against uncertainty and provides good online performances. Finally, the planned study involves the following steps: - A bibliography stage on model predictive control methods which will be mainly focused on stability analysis, certificate of robustness against uncertainty and performances in the design of the guidance law. - Even if the predictive control offers a theoretical corpus adapted to the control of linear or nonlinear systems, we will restrict to linear relative motion models in order to circumscribe the scope of the thesis. Since the MPC performances rely on the model accuracy, a first step will consists in the development of linearized model able to handle different space perturbations not taken into account yet. A comparative assessment of different models ? existing ones and new ones ? according to criteria to be defined, will help to set a hierarchy of models with respect to precision in terms of propagation (domain of validity) and with respect to the computational cost in a control scheme like MPC (based on-board satellite). - One of the main advantages of the MPC techniques is the ability to handle constraints. In the different rendezvous scenarii, one intends to consider the typical limitations encountered in direct methods for trajectory optimization: constraints on the trajectory and actuators. - Stability and robustness conditions analysis in the rendezvous framework is the second tackled problem. As preliminary step, the literature analysis will allow to state the most relevant conditions to apply for the rendezvous guidance problematic including uncertainties. Then the main investigation will rely on the invariant sets theory and will be correlated with the robust optimization analysis expanded in a recent CNES/LAAS R&T contract. - Finally, the global performances of the exhibited guidance laws will be evaluated through numerical simulations, results of which will be compared to those proceeding from projects as ATV, PRISMA, SIMBOL - X or PROBA-3. ------------------------------------------------------------- 2- Post-doc position in Pisa (source: Luigi Ambrosio) The Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa announces a selection, based on work to date and possible interview, for a research contract as part of the European Project ERC AdG *GeMeThNES* ?/Geometric Measure Theory in non-Euclidean spaces/?? ********************** English version: Recruitment in optimization at Cermics, École des Ponts ParisTech. The École des Ponts ParisTech is one of the world's oldest engineering institutes, and Cermics is the applied mathematics research center. http://cermics.enpc.fr/equipes/optimisation-eng.html Since its creation in 2000, the Cermics "Optimization and systems team" focus has been on developing numerical methods in stochastic dynamic optimization, with two originalities * the use of variational methods (rather than dynamic programming), * the discretization of the "measurability constraints" (on what depends the optimal control?). The models we study are controlled dynamical systems in discrete time, subject to noises, staying thus close to applications and to the numerical implementation. Indeed, our concern is not the temporal discretization, but that of the noise, the state and the measurability constraints. Several thesis were defended on the subject, in collaboration with our main industrial contact, which is Electricité de France (EDF). Besides, we collectively produced international publications, and we are about to finish a book. Recently, our industrial contacts (Thalès, EDF) have sollicitated us for problems of dynamic optimization under risk constraints. This type of problems raises new issues. The "optimization and risk" theme becomes more and more central in our concerns: formulation of risk constraints (probability, risk measures, utility functions) , dynamic consistency issues, numerical methods. Guy Cohen established the Optimization and systems team in 2000. With its retirement in 2010, the team launches the recruitment of a confirmed researcher, of international level. The position profile is rather open. We are looking for a candidate who would participate to the scientific life of the team, would supervise thesis and make a commitment in contractual applied activities (energy, transport). The participation in collaborative research with the other Cermics teams and other laboratories (transport) is encouraged. The École des Ponts ParisTech offers to the candidate possibilities of teaching and students training supervision. The participation in the launching and in the animation of an academic chair is deeply encouraged.
